In 2014, Aerey (now Birdhouse) was founded on the philosophy of being for and by entrepreneurs. Today, Birdhouse is a successful and well-known accelerator program in the Belgian start-up landscape. To continue this growth successfully, Birdhouse decided to partner with Forcit Benelux for this purpose. Setting up a specific accelerator program (vertical) around aging & longevity and expanding to Brussels.
Birdhouse launches accelerator around Aging & Longevity
For the new vertical accelerator program, Birdhouse has defined six major societal challenges within the Aging & Longevity domain that start-ups can set their sights on. It did so together with "aging experts" Dirk Schyvinck (author of the book "What if we turn 100 soon?") and Keren Etkin (TheGerontechnologist, AgeTech expert from Israel). These challenges translate into six domains: healthy and fit aging, mental & cognitive well-being, mobility & transportation, smart longer independent living & residential care, financial well-being and social well-being (neighborhoods to live longer together).
Birdhouse expands to Brussels and welcomes international start-ups.
Following Ghent and Antwerp, Birdhouse will now offer its accelerator program in Brussels. In this way, the accelerator hopes to attract a mix of Brussels, Flemish, Walloon as well as international start-ups from various sectors. The accelerator's primary communication will therefore now be in English.
Jan-Willem Callebaut (founder Birdhouse): "We have noticed for years that we reach a large part of the start-up ecosystem in Brussels much less than the Flemish one because of a language barrier. To give you an idea: for 5 years in a row now, we have been getting at least 500 applications per half year for our accelerator, at least 90% of which always came from Flanders. So there is still a huge potential for Birdhouse to also be active in Brussels and vice versa, we believe that a program like Birdhouse's can definitely have its place in the Brussels ecosystem alongside other established players already active there."
